The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology was established in September 2006.
The Department offers a five-year undergraduate programme leading to Bachelor of Technology Agriculture (Fisheries and Aquaculture) in line with the practice and philosophy of the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology where it is domiciled. It also offers postgraduate programme leading to award of Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degrees in Fisheries and Aquaculture . ). Our curriculum is structured to cover all the relevant areas in fisheries and aquaculture.
Staff and students have access to the Departmental fish farm and myriad aquatic habits particularly the Otamiri River which passes through the University and are involved in interdisciplinary partnerships with other academic programmes. We also have strong links with research and development agencies as well as private organizations. The scope and breadth of our programme equips our graduates to enter the expanding field of fisheries and applied aquatic science including fisheries management, governmental regulatory departments, environmental impact assessment, environmental conservation, pollution control, fish farm companies, hatcheries, pharmaceutical companies, biotechnological companies, bioinformatics, forensic sciences etc.
PHILOSOPHY, OBJECTIVES AND EMPLOYMENT/CAREER OPPORTUNITIES OF THE FISHERIES & AQUACULTURE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMME
With the nature of the science of Fisheries & Aquaculture, the objectives and philosophy of the programme are to train and equip its beneficiaries/ student to:
i. Acquire scientific and technical expertise for the management of small, medium or large scale fisheries stock for the nations huge inland and coastal water resources.
ii. Act as aquatic natural resources managers for our numerous inland water drainage basins, coastal and marine waters.
iii. Acquire expertise in the finfish, shellfish and other edible aquatic organisms so as develop, manage, provide extension services and consult for fish farmers and/or become self-employed aquaculture entrepreneurs.
iv. Gain employment in the public or private sector of our economy as fisheries officers, Aqua-culturists and environmental resources officers of oil/gas companies.
