Biography

In recent years, bacterial resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics has risen dramatically. Contributing to this increase has been the spread of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs), enzymes that hydrolyze the expanded-spectrum cephalosporins, like ceftazidime and cefotaxime, and/or the monobactam and aztreonam. Dr Akujobi’s research is geared towards isolation of bacterial species with the inherent capability to produce these enzymes and elucidation of the different classes of these. Efforts are made to use phytochemicals isolated from local plants to combat the antibiotic resistance in these organisms. In a recent time in Nigeria, there has an increase in the menace of environmental pollution caused by oil exploration and transportation. This has caused tremendous hardship on the host communities of exploration oil companies and has led to constant friction between the members of these communities and the oil companies. There is a need to find an environmentally friendly approach to remedy this situation. Dr Akujobi’s work has been able to discover that the oil-polluted soil can be remediated within a very short time by the use of pollutant-adapted microorganisms with the help of different types of organic nutrient supplements. Due to constant soil nutrient depletion, desert encroachment and indiscriminate environmental pollution in Nigeria, plants especially crop plants are always under environmental stresses which affect their yields. We are trying to identify some plant growth promoting rhizobacteria that would be able to ameliorate these stresses and improve plant yield.
