Biography

Engine oils, generally referred to as lubricating oils, are liquids used to reduce friction or prevent contact of parts or surfaces in relative motion, that is, sliding, rolling or rubbing surfaces as in automotive engines. By so doing, they prevent severe wear, rust and corrosion of the engine parts. Other auxiliary functions include; cooling/temperature regulation of the engine parts and prevention of particle deposition on close fitting parts.

During usage, these oils undergo degradation, which turn them black, less viscous and hence ineffective and unfit for further lubrication. Consequently, numerous gallons of these used engine oils are thrown away everyday as “spent” thereby posing serious environmental problems.

The major thrust of Professor Njiribeako’s research is concerned with the resource recovery of these oil wastes including those from industrial machineries. Thus he is involved in the applied research of treatment/regeneration processes of spent engine/industrial oils and development of the prototype pilot plant units for eventual scale –up to industrial plant.

In recent times, Professor Njiribeako and his co-workers have deployed tools and developing new ones for modeling and simulating these waste regeneration processes/systems for optimal control.

Biography

Fossil fuels are forever depleting and need to be replaced both for economic and environmental reasons. Alternative energy sources like biofuels which are environmental friendly become the focus of new research. Dr. Ibe’s research focuses on the utilization of available raw materials as sources for alternative energy.

Polymers and plastics have become ubiquitous Dr. Ibe continues to study the diffusion of permeants like water, air, Co2 and oxygen through polymers as a necessary technological back up to the foods and packaging industry.

Biography

With the heightened socio-economic and industrial activities, waste generation in the form of solid, liquid and gas has equally escalated with the resultant pollution and other environmental problems, hence the need to control them.

Recently Dr. Orga was able to draw an analogy from modeling and optimization of waste treatment systems involving large flowsheet, to some other large flowsheet systems that need efficient/optimal control of activities/processes, to equally developing effective tools for their efficient management, including “human systems” such as “Simulated Flowsheet Models for (i) e- [General Students’/Course Registration, Semester Course Registration and Results Processing; including Statement of Results’/Transcript]” & (ii) e- [monitoring, supervision, control and assessment of Nigerian Universities by NUC]

Dr. Orga’s research is concerned with developing effective modules for waste treatment/control systems. Thus he has deployed tools and developed new ones for modeling and simulating these processes/systems(mainly gaseous and liquid effluent treatment systems) for optimal control.

Biography

As need for better understanding and development of processes control systems have proliferated and the value of mathematical modelling has become more widely noticed, many models have been developed for chemical, physical, biological, biomedical, etc processes. Consequently upon this, interest in mathematical modelling and its applications has increased. Engr. Ike\\\\\\\'s research is concerned with the development of mathematical models of chemical, physical, biological, biomedical, etc processes and the general principles that can be utilized.

Many recent efforts has been made to the understanding of the static or dynamic behaviour of our processes, how they react to change in various inputs. Our ultimate goal is to develop a control system for the processes which will guarantee that the operational objectives of the processes are satisfied, optimizing their performance in the presence of ever-changing disturbances. In recent work, Engr. Ike and his co researchers have shown how a computer executive-aided simulation can be developed and used for these purposes.

One goal of our current research is the development of theoretical and experimental models of processes (chemical, physical, biological, biomedical, etc), utilization of the models in simulation of these processes in the search for the process improvements, design, control and optimization.

Biography

Offshore oil and gas exploration activities have in recent times been on the increase. This is because as the number of new discoveries of oil and gas reserves decreases, there is need to fully exploit existing resources. These offshore exploration activities have their concomitant technological challenges, which are quite different from those experienced during onshore exploration. These challenges have led to the rampant use of Floating production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) platforms, and major modifications of the process equipment used on these platforms such as coil-wound heat exchangers and contacting columns. The process plant for these operations includes Vapour Liquid Equilibrium (VLE) contacting devices for absorption, stripping and distillation. Such sways will result in tilting of the VLE equipment mounted on the platforms and lead to a loss or total collapse of the efficiency of such equipment. The design of VLE equipment which can operate under such conditions without loss of efficiency still remains a major Engineering challenge.

Engr Onyelucheya’s current research is focused on the development of a plate column that can operate without loss of efficiency under vertical, tilt and motion conditions is the motivation for this research work.

Biography

The Palpable infiltration of Mathematics into the ranks and files of current Chemical Engineering practice is by no means accidental. The increasing needs of a world whose resources are slowly diminishing mean that practioners have to employ increased ingenuity in the development of new processes. The inevitable result is that at least in the Chemical and Petroleum industries, there has been a noticeable shift towards a more quantitative approach to the problems of both design and operation of the industrial processes. Mathematical modelling and analysis is now a prominent feature in many industrial endeavours F.N. Uzondu and E.C. Osoka have modelled the sand drying plant of typical sheet/hollow glass plants and came up with a model whose solution predicted excellently the design of various units of the plant. The model solution also predicted the behaviour of the plant – i.e. prediction of the humidity of sand from inlet wet end to the – dry output end. The allowable humidity of sand used in making batch for glass making is 0.1%. The model solution predicted this and the analysis in glass making laboratory for this output sand conforms to 0.1%. In the petroleum industries the paradigms as above are in vogue.
