CIVIL ENGINEERING

Since its establishment in 1982, the department of Civil Engineering has grown to become one of the finest in the Continent. With options in Structural Engineering, Water Resources Engineering Option and Public Health Engineering, our students are exposed to quality learning.

Civil engineering is about thinking big. It is about creating things for the benefit of millions of people.. It is a piece of the puzzle towards creating a sustainable world. Most of all, it is about serving society.

At FUTO we provide research solutions and prepare graduates for the complex infrastructure challenges that face our society. We have research strength in structures and are expanding our expertise and facilities to encompass sustainability, climate change and renewable energy. Our staff expertise and laboratory facilities are much sought after by our profession and industry partners as part of our consulting services.

Philosophy and Objectives

The objectives of the postgraduate diploma programme in Civil Engineering are as follows:

  • To prepare students for further postgraduate studies in Civil Engineering and develop in them critical understanding of the subject and broaden their knowledge of professional engineering.
  • To provide a bridge between HND and the Bachelor’s degree programmes and ensure that graduates of some physical or chemical sciences could be convertible to registrable engineers via the PGD programme.

Civil Engineering is the oldest branch of the Engineering profession. It involves application of the laws of nature (forces and materials) to the design, construction operation and maintenance of facilities that serve our needs in an efficient and economical manner. Typical Specialties within Civil Engineering includes Structural, Transportation, Environmental (including water/waste water treatment and water resources), geotechnical, surveying and construction Engineering. Civil Engineers assume a great deal of responsibility in practice because of the nature of their work.

The Department of Civil Engineering in FUTO was established in the 1982/1983 academic year in the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET). Since its establishment in 1982, the department has grown from strength to strenght due to inputs from qualified and highly experienced Academics, Technologists and Administrative Staff.

Presently, the department has three options, namely:

  • Structural Engineering Option
  • Water Resources Engineering Option
  • Public Health Engineering Option

These options represent the major professional thrust of the Department and both teaching and research efforts are focused on these areas. The Postgraduate programme in the department started in the 1991/92 session. Presently, the department has M.Eng. and Ph.D programmes in Water Resources and Structural Engineering and PGD in Civil Engineering.

The vision of the department is to be the fountain head of new ideas and innovations in Civil Engineering and to produce graduate-enterpreneurs who are job creators in their areas of specialization. The mission of the Department is to offer world-class undergraduate and Postgraduate education, research guidance, professional consultancy, outreach and manpower training as well as leadership in Civil Engineering.

Biography

John ChukwumaEzeh is a Professor of Civil Engineering (Structures). Prof. Ezeh holds a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D) in Structural Engineering from the University of Nigeria,Nsukka(UNN). He is an active member of the following professional bodies: Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (MNI. Struct. E), A. M. ASCE and COREN. Prof. J. C. Ezeh has several publications in national and international Journals and has also presented papers at National and International Conferences. He teaches courses in Structural Engineering at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has also carried out several researches in the area of Structural Engineering. John served as acting Head of Civil Engineering Department 2010 – 2014.He is presently the Head of Department of Civil Engineering (July, 2016 to Date). Engr. Prof. J. C. Ezeh is married to Engr. Dr. (Mrs) G. N. Ezeh of EEE Department, FUTO and the marriage is blessed with three Children. He enjoys coaching and mentoring young academics. John takes delight in watching football and wrestling.

Biography

Concrete and mortar are the most widely used construction materials. They are, however, expensive because of the cost of the cement component. The development of supplementary cementitious materials is a critical factor in achieving a reduction in the cost of concrete and mortar. Mrs. Joan Arimanwa has shown a growing interest in developing supplementary cementitous materials from agricultural, industrial and domestic wastes.

Stability of structures is an important consideration in developing countries like Nigeria. Mrs. Arimanwa has a strong interest in structural stability.

Biography

Engr. Dr. B. C. Okoro (B.Sc. – Civil, M.Sc, – Civil, PhD)is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Dept. of Civil Engineering, FUTO. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering/Water Resources Engineering. He is a COREN registered engineer and belongs to several professional bodies. He has a teaching experience of more than thirty years in the areas of water resources engineering, public health/environmental engineering, fluid mechanics, hydraulics, engineering economy engineering management & law. He has supervised several undergraduate and graduate research projects and also contributed some papers to journals and attended several seminars, workshops and conferences. He is a consultant to several organizations. Engr. Dr. Okoro has had rich and varied administrative experience. He headed the department of Civil Engineering for years (2001 – 2006), and currently heading Building Technology Department, FUTO.

Biography

My career started in 1987 at MARTRIC W. A. Ltd. (construction engineers), Orji, where I was the Assistant Civil Engineer. In 1988, I joined OSAC Engineering Nig. Ltd. (consulting engineers), Egbu, and held the position of Design/Project Engineer. In 1989, I joined the the Works Department of Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri, where I rose to the position of Principal Works Engineer. By the year 2000, I left Alvan and joined the Quality Assurance Department of Bouygues Nig. Ltd. (BNL, a foremost French Building construction firm), Abuja. After undergoing some on-the-job training in QA/QC, certified by SON Nig. and SGS UK, I rose to the rank of Head, Quality Assurance Department in 2002. My interest in academics made me to leave BNL in 2003 to join the services of Federal University of Technology, Minna, as a lecturer in Civil/Structural Engineering. Presently, I am a lecturer in Civil/Structural Engineering at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, since 2005.

Engr. Nwoke Herbert is a lecturer that combines theoretical and practical knowledge in civil engineering to impart knowledge on students. He worked as a civil engineer in many establishments before joining F.U.T.O. as a lecturer. He has taught many courses including Civil Engineering Materials, Public Health Engineering, Civil Engineering Surveying and Photogrammetry, Design of Water Treatment Plants and so many others. He has major interest in Water Resources Engineering.

Engr. Lewechi Anyaogu is a graduate of Department of Civil Engineering, Federal University of Technology, Owerri where he graduated in 2003 with First Class Honors. He was the best graduating student of his department. He obtained M.Eng (Structural Engineering) in 2010 and graduated with a CGPA of (4.92/5.00) from Federal University of Technology, Owerri.

He was appointed a Lecturer in 2005. Since his appointment, he has been working tirelessly to produce engineers who are capable of proffering solution to today’s engineering problems.

Engr. Anyaogu has carried out a lot of researches on introduction of some industrial and agricultural wastes to serve as substitutes for cement and reinforcing bars in building construction in order to making housing and accommodation affordable to third world countries like Nigeria

The introduction of these materials will make housing and accommodation affordable by people. He equally developed models that will help to know the percentage quantity of the orthodox materials that will be replaced by these newly introduced materials through optimization.

Engr. Anyaogu has equally developed classical equations for analyzing box culvert and girder using Vlasov’s theory. These equations are only use for torsional analysis of the culvert of any support condition.

He is still carrying out research on Structural Dynamics and Stability of Structures.
