Academic and Professional Qualification

  • B.S., 1965., Electrical/Electronics Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, USA.
  • M.S., 1967, Applied Physics, Stanford University, USA.
  • Ph.D., 1971, Mathematical Physics, University of Chicago, USA.

Publications

  • Quantum geometrodynamics. The paper gives detailed account of the new physics .
  • Asymmetry (symmetry) between matter and antimatter. The paper disproves the conventional belief that the universe is dominated by matter and contains very little antimatter.
  • The challenge of fusion. Paper gives the comprehensive theory of fusion. Hans Bethe’s work is a mere algorithm , not a theory of Fusion-hence the failure to realize it in practice despite about 80 years of effort.
  • The structure of atoms and nuclei. The Periodic Table of the Chemical Elements is the result of empirical work by Chemists. P.A.M. Dirac’s 1928 Theory is an excellent work on the hydrogen electron which unfortunately cannot be extended to other atoms. This paper gives a comprehensive formal theory of atoms and nuclei (no perturbation theory ); and determines the mass of neutrinos.
  • Science and its three revolutions: A Valedictory Lecture, the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria (2010): The first two revolutions by Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein are about causal systems, and the third by A. Nduka is about non-causal (or chaotic ) systems.

Biography

Professor Beniah Ndudim Onwuagba is a distinguished Professor of Solid State Physics, a Fellow of the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria (FSESN) and a Fellow of Nigerian Institute of Physics (FNIP). He studied at the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka and qualified B.Sc Honours Physics (1975). M. Phil Physics (1980) and Ph.D in Solid State Physics (1984). At the completion of his Ph.D programme, he had Certificate of Merit by winning Imo State Nigerian Prize Award for the best Postgraduate student in the Faculty of Physical Sciences of University of Nigeria for the 1983/84 session.

Professor Onwuagba joined the services of Federal University of Technology, Owerri, on November 01, 1985 as Lecturer I. He was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer on October 01, 1987 and rose to the rank of Reader in 1990. In 1994, Professor Onwuagba was promoted to the rank of Professor of Solid State Physics.

Professor Onwuagba was appointed a Junior Associate of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy (1988 – 1991); a Regular Associate of International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy (1992 – 1997); and appointed a Senior Associate of Abdus Salam, International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy (2001 – 2006).

Professor Onwuagba was Visiting Senior Scientist, Department of Physics, University of Padova, Italy (Sept. 1989 – March 1990); Visiting Professor, Institute of Theoretical Physics, University of Regensburg, Germany (Sept. – Nov. 1997) and Visiting Professor, Department of Physics, University of Modena, Italy (Oct, 1998 – Oct. 1999).

Professor Onwuagba has impacted the international scientific community positively with his research contributions in the areas of Lattice Dynamics, Energy Band Structure Calculations, Density Functional Theory, Metal Clusters, Quantum Wires, Superconductivity and Solar Energy. One of his landmark achievements in sciences is the demonstration of a sizeable attractive component of the interatomic potential due to the s-d interaction in transition metals, which has the same form as the Born Mayer potential. This short range potential formally replaces the local field correction in the Lattice Dynamics of transition metals.

With over 30 years of teaching and research experience in both Nigeria and Europe, Professor Onwuagba has published over 32 journal articles in highly reputable International and Local Journals. He has participated in over 20 international research Workshops and Conferences in Italy and Germany. He also has a distinguished record of administrative expertise as a three time Head of Department, Physics; Dean School of Science (1996 – 1998); Member, 7th Governing Council from 2000 – 2004; Director, Centre for Energy & Power Systems Research in FUTO, 2006 – July 2011 and recently Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Federal University of Technology, Owerri, with effect from July 22, 2011.

Professor Onwuagba has supervised several undergraduate and postgraduate candidates. He has served as External Examiner, Professorial Assessor and participated in the National Universities Commission Accreditation Team to many universities in Nigeria.

Professor Onwuagba hails from Nnokwa in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. He is Knight of St. Christopher in the Anglican Communion, is happily married to Lady Ngozi Onwuagba and they are blessed with six children who are graduates in their various disciplines and a grandson.
