AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS

Established in October 1980, FUTO's department of Agricultural Economics offers the popular B.Agric Tech degree in undergraduate studies and top-rated Ph.D. and Masters programs degree in Agricultural Economics.The Department teaches the relevance of Agricultural economics in line with the real Nigerian and world situation in terms of social-economic applications of Agriculture.

Here our students study courses ranging from the production, distribution, and consumption of food and energy in both well-developed and less-developed countries.Our researches strive to understand and improve the efficiency of natural resource use, government policy, market performance, environmental quality, and economic welfare.

Biography

C.C. Eze hails from Elugwu Nkwumeato, Ihitte Clan in Ihitte/Uboma LGA of Imo State, Nigeria and is married with three children.

Eze holds a B. Agric, M.Sc, PhD degrees in Agricultural Economics from University of Nigeria NSukka and an L.L.B, ; BL degrees in law of the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus and Nigerian Law School Bwari, Abuja, Nigeria . He is currently a reader ( an Associate Professor) of Agricultural Economics and was between 2008 and 2010 an Associate (Deputy) Dean Post Graduate School, Federal University of Technology , Owerri.

He has over 5 academic awards and research grants. He has taught both at his alma matter (University of . Nigeria . Nsukka ), Abia State University, Imo State University where he was made a adjunct Associate Professor in 2008 and as permanent staff of Federal University of Technology Owerri since 2002 . This is in addition to being a chief Training officer for nine years (1992-2001) at National Board for community Banks, a regulatory institution for micro finance banks in Nigeria. He has consulted for several institutions in Nigeria and overseas in the area of Agricultural projects, food security and rural development. In 2009 , Eze was appointed an Erasmus Mundus fellow in Rural Development for three months . This afforded him the opportunity to visit four universities in Europe namely Ghent University (Belgium), Wageningen University of Research (Netherlands) , Humboldt University Berlin( Germany) and Nitra University of Agriculture (Slovakia) where he lectured , delivered seminars on rural development , poverty and livelihood as well as assisted in supervising Ph.D projects. On 24th November, 2010 , Eze was appointed the Honourable Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in his home State, Imo State . He was a member National council on Commerce and Industry. Eze is an expert in Agricultural Finance , rural development and environmental economics. He has researched and consulted extensively on issues of rural smallholder farmers ,poverty reduction , food security and the environment . He has over fifty five peer reviewed articles in learned journals published both locally and internationally.

Dr. Christopher Uwanu Ibekwe had his undergraduate studies at the Premier University of Ibadan, Ibadan Nigeria where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree (B.Sc.) in Agricultural Economics in 1983. Thereafter he proceeded for a Master of Science degree also in another Nigerian premier University , the University of Nigeria Nsukka where be obtained a M.Sc degree in Agricultural Economics in 1994. To crown it all as a lover of academics, he immediately proceeded for a Doctor of Philosophy degree in the same university and completed that in 2001. Dr U.C. Ibekwe then joined the services of the Federal University of Technology and is one of the practising academics in the department of Agricultural Economics.

An active team player in a highly dynamic and challenging global environment. Appointed an assistant lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Federal University of Technology Owerri in 2002 and rose to the rank of a senior lecturer in 2011. Worked with International institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in 2004 and 2005 on Baseline cassava Survey Project and National Cassava Market Information Services in Nigeria respectively. Teaching undergraduate and post graduate courses in the Department and currently undertaking self sponsored research on organic agriculture, traditional farming systems involving local and improved cassava verities as adaptation and mitigation strategy for climate change.
