Biography

Uchechukwu M. Chukwuocha is a Reader in Public Health, and currently the Acting Head of the Department of Public Health, Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Nigeria. He obtained his PhD in Medical Parasitology from the Imo State University, Owerri, Nigeria in 2010. He had his Post-Doctoral Fellowship [Awarded by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS)] in 2015 at the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology, National Autonomous University of Mexico, where he studied the potentials of Whole Plant therapies as alternatives to antimalarial pharmaceuticals. In 2018, He was awarded among just two Nigerians, the prestigious US Fulbright Scholarship to advance his studies on Whole Plant Therapies at the Laboratory of Medical Zoology, University of Massachusetts, Amherst MA, USA. He started his career as an Assistant Lecturer, in 2005.

Uchechukwu founded the Innovations and Technologies for Disease Control (INTEDeC) research group which focuses on developing innovative methods and interventions for infectious disease control. The group has so far successfully developed and deployed two ehealth tools on Google Play store which are MACO-HCA (an interactive health communication application for the control of malaria and COVID-19) and the KnowMalaria mobile digital game (a digital game that aims to deepen the knowledge of players about malaria and its control).  The group also created and successfully deployed the Malaria Classroom Corner project (a school-based intervention to enhance the malaria knowledge, attitude and perceptions among school children). In collaboration with the ACTRG research group of Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, they have developed and patented an Autonomous Contact Tracing Wearable Device with Vitals and Environmental Sensing in 2023. His paper on “Development and evaluation of a mobile digital quiz game for malaria control” was among the 48 highest scoring abstracts selected among 2300 submissions for oral presentation during the 19th International Congress on Infectious Diseases and was slated for presentation in the hot topics session of the scientific meeting.

Uchechukwu was awarded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation research grant in 2022, as Principal Investigator to develop and pilot a Crowdsourced Image-based Morbidity Hotspot Surveillance method for Neglected Tropical Diseases. He is involved as Co-Investigator in two Nigeria TETFund NRF grant funded research projects awarded in 2021 and 2023 respectively.

In 2022, He attracted equipment worth over One hundred (100) million Naira from the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) with which he set-up the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Epidemiology. This earned him commendation from the governing council of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. The state-of-the-art laboratory is focused on carrying out cutting edge molecular/ genetic research on infectious diseases.

As part of his contribution towards combating the COVID-19 pandemic, he designed and implemented a drug shop intervention to promote COVID-19 knowledge, appropriate behaviour and practices among patent medicine vendors in South Eastern Nigeria. This was to involve this very important group in efforts towards curbing the community spread of the pandemic.  He is currently piloting the community public art for public health project termed “Ka Ala Di Mma” which translates to “That the society may be cleansed”. This is an initiative which uses public art to promote awareness, prevention and control of Neglected Tropical Diseases and to curb stigmatization of people affected in endemic rural communities.

Uchechukwu’s commitment to research and scholarship has earned him a number of scientific awards and recognitions. These include; Appointment as a young affiliate of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) (2010-2014); Qualification in a global competition among young scientists to participate in the 61st Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Medicine and Physiology (2011); Appointed a TWAS-DFG visiting Scientist to the Institute of Tropical Medicine and International Health, Charite University of Medicine, Berlin, Germany (2012); Appointed a Mentor in the Nigerian Schlumberger Excellence in Education Development Schools (SEED) Science project (2012); Nominated Future Leader in Science and Technology to participate in the Science and Technology in Society (STS) forum in Kyoto, Japan (2015). He has also been awarded several competitive travel grants such as the Global Health travel grant and the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene travel award to participate in international conferences where he presented his scientific research papers. He serves as a global assessor for international exchange programme applications such as the TWAS-DFG cooperation visits programme and the TWAS Advanced Research Fellowships.

Uchechukwu has trained and mentored several undergraduate and postgraduate students in research and innovation. He has also hosted foreign students on international research exchange and field experience. In 2012, he mentored and led the Federal Government Girls College, Owerri, Nigeria to win the first position in the first ever Schlumberger Excellence in Education Development (SEED) Science Competition in Nigeria. He is also a mentor in the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) programme, a United States Government Initiative to invest in the next generation of African leaders

Uchechukwu is well published with over 80 scientific articles in peer reviewed journals and contributes significantly to global scientific discuss on infectious diseases and global health. His research focus is on infectious diseases control and global health.
