FUTO Students Excel at Varsitymentor Africa Tech Exposure Week in Accra, Ghana

In a remarkable display of talent and innovation, four (4) students from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), have garnered international acclaim at the Africa Tech Career Summit held at the Google AI Labin Accra, Ghana. Balami Joseph David, Akalazu David Udochukwu, Moses Victoria Ifunanyachukwu, and ChikezieLovedayUdochukwu, all fourth-year students from the departments of Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Science, and Information Technology respectively, showcased exemplary skills and knowledge during the week-long summit organized by Varsity Mentor in collaboration with Google AI and Google for Education.

The summit, which ran from January 8^th to 12^th, 2024, centered around the theme “Crafting a Tech Career: Strategies for Empowering Change” and featured over seventeen (17) speakers from diverse backgrounds in the tech industry. Participants had the opportunity to engage with experts and gain insights into navigating the evolving landscape of technology and innovation.

One of the highlights of the summit was the Design Challenge, where students were tasked with developing innovative solutions to address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The FUTO students, exhibiting exceptional teamwork and creativity, emerged victorious in the challenge, with Team C, comprising Balami Joseph David and Akalazu David Udochukwu, clinching the top prize. Their ground-breaking solution not only demonstrated technical proficiency but also a deep understanding of pressing social and environmental issues.

As a reward for their achievement, Team C was presented with a Pixel smartphone courtesy of Google. This recognition further solidifies FUTO’s reputation as a breeding ground for top-tier talent and innovation.

In addition to their success in the Design Challenge, the FUTO students showcased their intellectual prowess during the Q&A session of a presentation, where they fielded thought-provoking questions with confidence and insight. Their exemplary performance in both the practical and theoretical aspects of the summit underscores the quality of education and holistic approach to learning at FUTO.
