Dr Onunkwo-Akunne, Augustine has a BSc (Hons) in Geology at the University of Calabar in 1983. This was followed by Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) at the University of Nigeria Nsukka in 1988; thereafter he obtained an MSc in Hydrogeology from the same university of Nigeria Nsukka in 1995/96. In 2011, he obtained a PhD degree in Hydrogeology at the Federal University of Technology Owerri.

He obtained a certificate course in geographic information system at the Federal College of Land Resources Technology (FECOLART) Owerri.

He is teaching Hydrogeology and Structural geology at the Federal University of Technology Owerri, in the Department of Geology (Geosciences). In the same university, he also taught applied Geochemistry to undergraduate students, Geomorphology and Environmental Impact Assessment to postgraduate students (PGD). He also taught Hydrogeology and Geographic Information System to PGD and MSc Students. He was a director of underground water geologists before joining the Federal University of Technology Owerri. While in the Federal University of Technology Owerri, he served in various capacities such as students adviser, member of the admission committee of the department, member, special allocation committee, assistant coordinator to the Institute of continuing education (CCE) and Lecturer Science Lab Technology Training Programme (SLTTP) in the Federal University of Technology, Dr Onunkwo-AkunneAugustine have trained many students in geological field research and was academic adviser to over 200 students.

He has 40 publications (to his credit) in water resources. He explored and discovered the deposit, depth of occurrence and thickness estimation of Pb-Zn-Fe (S) mineralization in Abakaliki Area, southeastern Nigeria. He is versatile in geological field research.

Research Interests

Dr Onunkwo-Akunne Augustine main areas of research are in water resource evaluation and environment, water pollution control and underground investigations. He specializes in finding the alternative sources of water supply for an area and has an interest in identifying the viability of any project to the environment. His major project was the investigation of adverse hydrogeological/Hydrological impact of flooding that occurred in Nigeria in 2012. Presently Onunkwo-Akunne is working on the impact of Boko Haram insurgents on underground water resources.
