Biography

Dr Obinna C. Akakuru hails from Obazu Mbieri in Mbaitoli Local Government Area in Imo State. He obtained his First School leaving Certificate from T.T.C. practising school Irete in 1995, and then took his West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at Government Secondary School Owerri in 2001. He thereafter gained admission at the Anambra State University Uli, where he studied Geology and graduated in 2007. He proceeded for his National Youth Service at Rivers State in 2008, where he started his teaching career as a Physics and Computer Science teacher at Ogu/Bolo Technical Secondary School. He obtained his Post Graduate Diploma in Education from Usmanu Dan Fodio University, Sokoto in 2011; this certificate qualified him as a registered teacher.

He later obtained his Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Geological Sciences (Water Resources and Environmental Hydrogeology) from Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka in 2013; Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Geography (Hydrology and Water Resources) from Abia State University Uturu in 2016; and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Geological Sciences (Hydrogeology) from Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka in 2018.

Dr Akakuru gained employment in 2010, as a Geologist in the Imo State Ministry of Petroleum and Environment (Environmental Engineering and Ecology Department). Due to his love for academics, he resigned from the Ministry and joined Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri as an Assistant Lecturer in Department of Geography and Environmental Studies in 2012, within his seven (7) years; he rose to the rank of Lecturer I. During his stay at Alvan Ikoku FCE, he served in many capacities including attracting and carrying out institutional-based research, which was sponsored by Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in 2014. He joined the Federal University of Technology in July 2019 as a Lecturer II.

He has experiences in numerical groundwater modelling; techniques for the physical characterization of aquifers, both in the field and in the laboratory; concepts and techniques in offshore groundwater research; basic knowledge of ArcGIS, AquaChem, SULFER 32, SPSS, and MATLAB; communicating science through publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals, with over eighteen (18) scholarly journals in both local and international journals.

Dr Akakuru is a member of some associations including; Nigerian Association of Hydrogeologist (NAH); National Environmental Society (NES),  Association of Nigerian Geographers (ANG), and Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).

Dr Obinna Akakuru is happily married to Dr. (Mrs.) Annabel Obinna-Akakuru, a lecturer at Alvan Ikoku FCE, Owerri and the marriage is blessed with three (3) children.
