Welcome to the Department of Environmental Management (EVM). The department hosts teaching and research programmes in Pollution control Technology, Erosion and Flood control Technology and Geo-Environmental Technology. These programmes are broadly integrated through a strategic focus on natural environment, where we aim at advancing the understanding of fundamental processes, and of the linkages between different components of the environment (air, land, water and life). The range of research topics covered within the department and in collaboration with other research centres and universities is very broad, and reflects the diversity in the research interests of our staff.
As an accredited department, we offer programmes of high academic standard that are also relevant to the dynamic and changing world environment. In order to maintain our standards, we are regularly accredited by the Universities’ regulatory body, the National Universities Commission (NUC). Our quality of training is evident through the employability rating of our alumni working in both the private and public sectors across the world.

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Environmental Management was established by statute in 1997, and constituted within the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET) as Environmental Technology. The Department commenced its undergraduate degree programme in 1998 with a total of 38 students. The first batch of students graduated in 2002/2003 session. Environmental Technology metamorphosed to Environmental Management in line with NUC regulations and domiciled in the school of Environmental Sciences.
PHILISOPHY OF THE DEPARTMENT
A multidisciplinary approach is required for the development of sustainable solutions to environmental issues. Available knowledge in science, engineering, agriculture, biotechnology, socio-economics, et cetera have to be utilized for the attainment of a sustainable environment. In line with this, the Environmental Management programme has a philosophy of training high level manpower in science and technology towards tackling local, national and global environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, flooding, soil erosion and other changes in the environment resulting from anthropogenic activities. The programme is designed to produce a unique kind of manpower, equipped with planning, adaptive, technical and management skills in environmental surveillance, monitoring, management and sustainability.
AIM/OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The main aim of Environmental Management Programme is to produce competent, intellectually mature, ethical and socially responsible environmental resource managers.
The objectives of Environmental Management programme are to produce:
- Graduates that are innovative who can be self-employed;
- Graduates with skills for translating the theory and concepts of Resource and Environmental Management into practices relevant to communities and workplaces;
- Graduates who are aware and understand the range of environmental challenges and opportunities in the immediate and wider region; and
- Competent manpower for teaching and research in all aspects of environmental management.
RATIONALE/JUSTIFICATION
The totality of our environment has continued to change as a result of growth in human population and the resulting increases in anthropogenic activities including infrastructural development, mining, deforestation, agriculture, and various forms of resource exploitation. It is necessary that these changes fall within the limits that will make life sustainable on our planet. It has, therefore, become very indispensable to have our environment appropriately managed. The holistic management of the environment requires the application of the totality of relevant knowledge in science, engineering, technology and management. Consequently, the Environmental Management programme was conceived as an interdisciplinary programme with the main purpose being environmental resource management education. The Environment Management programme emphasizes quality teaching and research aimed at imparting not only theoretical knowledge of the environment but also the practical applications of such knowledge, research findings and skills to trainees and the general populace, with a view of providing practical solutions to environmental challenges, and offering services to humanity, so as to be able to cope with global environmental needs and challenges. Graduates of Environmental Management will have a broad-based education and training to be actively engaged in environmental surveillance, monitoring and management. The programme will also produce competent manpower fit to effectively operate in the fields of environmental pollution control/monitoring, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), as well as environmental quality regulation.
DEGREE PROGRAMMES
Environmental Management has both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The Undergraduate degree curriculum is a five-year programme of ten semesters leading to the award of B. Tech degree in Environmental Management. The first two years of the programme are specially designed to groom students in the general courses, normally classified as University and School courses respectively. Subsequently, a wide range of core courses and electives are offered to meet the needs of the various aspects of the environment.
Students are exposed to industrial work and experience during vacations after their 2nd and 3rd year, and throughout the second semester of 4th year. Only students who have passed all the lower year courses can proceed for SIWES (Students’ Industrial work Experience Scheme) in the fourth year of their study.
A well-articulated and supervised project report is required of every student in the final year. At the end of the programme, successful students are awarded a Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) degree.
