Biography

Agricultural engineering combines the disciplines of mechanical, civil, electrical, and chemical engineering with a basic understanding of physical and biological sciences and agricultural practices. It is a discipline concerned with solving the engineering problems of providing food, feed, fuel, fur and fibre for the people of the world. These problems include designing improved tools to work the soil and harvest the crops, as well as developing water supplies for agriculture and systems. Agricultural engineers design buildings in which to house animals or store grains. They solve problems of processing, packaging, transporting, and distributing the food and fibre products

The reason for the development of agricultural machines and systems is that everything about the agricultural production is physically demanding and working conditions are diverse. Machines help reduce drudgery, increase productivity, and enhance the power process and precision in, as well as the timeliness of, farming operations. With machines, there is an improvement in the quality of field operations and food products, reduction of losses and production costs. With the problem of peak labour demand, machines need to be designed to increase the power input into agriculture.

Asoegwu’s research is concerned with the development of prototype machines for solving different problems in agriculture such as: Egusi-Melon Washing Machine, Palm Fruit Digester, Rice Paddy Thresher, Self-Metering Poultry Feeder, Convective Dryer-Conveyor for Egusi-melon, Maize Sheller, Egusi-Melon Shelling Machine, Peanut Decorticator, Self-loading Cassava Grater, Christy Hunt Hammer Mill, Oscillating Feeder Conveyor, Groundnut Oil Extractor, Shear Test Box For Agricultural Products, African Breadfruit Decorticator, Spring-Loaded Slicing Machine, Vibratory Grain Sifter, Cassava Peeling and Washing Machine, Cold Press for Neem Oil, Carrot Washer, Biogas Digester, Tomato Grading Machine, Ginger Slicer, and Thermal Conductivity Measuring Instrument.

Asoegwu is also interested in the determination of the physical and frictional (flow) properties of agricultural materials and using them in the modelling of agricultural processes. These properties are necessary inputs in the design of several components of agricultural machines. Particle size and particle size distribution, play a significant role in flowability, bulk density, angle of repose and compressibility of granular solids. Properties such as bulk density, true density and porosity are useful in storage, transport and separation systems. The bulk density of granular materials plays an important role in the assessment of storage capacity, bag sizing, feeder design and theoretical evaluation of discharge rate from the hopper. The angle of repose affects the capacity of storage structures and is relevant to the design of chutes and conveyors. Frictional properties may be required in the design of storage structures, processing, and handling equipment and other applications.

Crop production is synonymous with tillage. Tillage affects it in so many ways. How tillage and soil dynamics influences crop production is of interest to Asoegwu and his co-workers.
