You are welcome to the Department of Information Technology (IFT), Federal University of Technology Owerri Nigeria. The department was established in 2004 as Information Management Technology (IMT) in the School of Management Technology (SMAT). However, following the approval of the School Of Computing and Information Technology on 30th August 2018, it was moved and changed to the Department of Information Technology to make it more responsive to the urgent need to bridge the knowledge gap in Information technology critical for the development of the country and world at large.
The philosophy of the Information Technology B.Tech programme is to develop manpower to meet the information and communication technology needs of business organizations, government, healthcare, schools, etc.
Information Technology specialists are responsible for selecting hardware and software products appropriate for an organization, integrating, and maintaining the applications for the organization’s computer users. They build computer networks or expand existing ones for the solution of business problems. The aim of the programme is to produce graduates with a broad and balanced Information Technology knowledge and practical skills to handle these responsibilities.
The department has staff with a background in various fields such as Computer Engineering, Communication Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science and Security Systems. The department has well-equipped laboratories which are actively utilized by both the staff and students for extensive research into the various areas of Information Technology.
Our Students are grounded in design, evaluation and implementation of systems, subsystems, components and devices whose operation depends on Information Technology or actual Information systems themselves. They are exposed to areas such as Blockchain technology, cyber-physical systems, networking, and industrial internet of things to mention but a few.
The department enjoys the support of relevant regulatory bodies, research institutions, and professional associations both locally and internationally. We establish appropriate linkages with the industry and other institutions involved in training, research and development both local and international.
We are positioned to produce graduates who are entrepreneurs, practitioners and captains of the Information Technology industry as well as other sectors of the economy leveraging on the ‘game-changing’ power of Information Technology.
