SOET ACTION PLAN

  • EXCELLENCE IN ACADEMIC & RESEARCH PRODUCTIVITY

GOALS:

  1. Support and promote the highest quality of all academic programmes and disciplines
  2. Improve research quality and impact
  3. Improve infrastructure to support research
  4. Foster a stronger research culture, with a clearly measurable output.
  5. Introduce Career development initiatives

Strategies:

  1. Convene quarterly strategic intellectual dialogues on the future academic directions of different Departments and programme areas.
  2. Identify and develop clearly defined research priority areas to engage staff in all Departments in multidisciplinary, society-relevant research.
  3. Build up a mentorship program that promotes access and interactions between experienced researchers with expertise in areas (like grant writing, research design and methods) and other academic staff.
  4. Improve the functionality and revenue generation viability of laboratories in SOET.
  5. Establish/implement functional collaboration and linkage programmes with sister faculties and colleges within and outside Nigeria, for staff and student exchange.
  6. Departments to develop document and carry out individual career development plans for lecturers.
  7. Encourage young academics to seek PhD and postdoctoral research training in research laboratories abroad.
  8. Encourage staff to establish individual collaborations with scientists abroad.
  9. Establish criteria for identification and reward of established productive researchers (EPRs); and ensure support for excellent researchers, commensurate with their productivity, regardless of the research area.
  10. Obtain annual records of publications from each Department/Unit (from 2013) and ensure comprehensive and accurate recording of research publications in FUTO research database.
  11. Establish and maintain publication requirement for PG thesis submission and defence.
  12. Sustain the SOET Seminar Series
  13. Set up SOET Research & Innovation Committee
  14. Set up SOET Linkages Committee

 

  • EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING, LEARNING AND PRODUCTIVITY

GOALS:

  1. Discipline-based education
  2. Student-centered and student-active teaching
  3. Develop a college-wide plan for the effective use of technology in teaching.
  4. Ensure that results are timely and up-to-date
  5. Promote on-time graduation
  6. Zero tolerance for examination malpractice

Strategies:

  1. Improve the quality and intensity of student advisors by continuously engaging class advisers
  2. Improve the quality and intensity of examination monitoring and invigilation.
  3. Encourage and enforce good work ethics, within discipline-based education research and teaching.
  4. Setup SOET Quality Assurance Committee to monitor staff compliance
  5. Develop SOET Quality Assurance Manual.
  6. Initiate consultations to implement a pilot-scale learning management system (LMS)
  7. Provide technical support and training for faculty who are interested in incorporating technology into their classroom practice.
  8. Include PG student supervision and completion targets in student allocation.
  9. Frequently evaluate strategies to boost timely completion of PG programs.
  10. Promote excellence in supervision through policy, best practice guidelines and training.

 

  • IMPACTING SOCIETY POSITIVELY

GOALS:

  1. To develop the structures for collaboration with Government, Industry and Society
  2. Promote the culture of society-relevant research
  3. Research for Development (R4D)

Strategies:

  1. SWOT Analysis to identify any impediments to collaboration with Government, Industry and Society.
  2. Identify stakeholders and potential partners
  3. Public consultations, networking and engagement to create lasting partnerships
  4. Set up Alumni relations initiatives
  5. Develop outreach programmes
  6. Appoint innovation scouts to identify and evaluate commercializable research outputs from the different Departments.
  7. Increase staff and student participation in community-engaged environmental initiatives.
