Department of Physics

Our Programmes

Undergraduate Programme

The Physics Board of Studies at her 156th meeting set up a committee to review her curriculum in line with the NUC minimum, benchmark and also meet International Standards.

The Board at her 157th, 158th, and 160th meetings considered the report submitted by the Committee and approved the curriculum after due consideration and modifications. This curriculum passed through the appropriate school and university committees and was finally approved and ratified at the 367th meeting of Senate.

The curriculum provides two major options for the Physics programme namely:

  1. Pure Physics Option
  2. Industrial Physics Option (Applied Nuclear Science, Electronics and Materials Science).

The options have four degree nomenclatures as follows:

1.   B. Tech Physics

2a. B. Tech Physics (Industrial Physics – Applied Nuclear Science).

2b. B. Tech Physics (Industrial Physics – Electronics)

2c. B. Tech Physics (Industrial Physics – Materials Science)

(1). is for Pure Physics option while (2a), (2b) and (2c) are for the Industrial Physics Option.

Postgraduate Programme

The Department currently offers postgraduate programmes leading to the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Physics, M.Sc. and Ph.D., degrees in Solid State Physics, Materials Science, Solar Energy Physics, Space Physics, Astrophysics, and Radiation and Health Physics.

Undergraduate Admission Requirements

  • Admission through Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME):

Acceptable pass in UTME and FUTO Screening Test with the subject combination: mathematics, physics, chemistry, and English language; plus passes at credit level in Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), or GCE O/Level or their equivalents in not more than two sittings, in at least five subjects, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, English language. and any other science subject.

  • Admission by Direct Entry
  1. ‘A’ level passes in two or three relevant subjects with ‘O’ level credit passes (including English language) in three or two other subjects at not more than two sittings.
  2. National Diploma (ND) in relevant subjects with a minimum of upper credit pass may qualify a candidate for admission into year II provided their programmes cover certain basic courses required by the Department. They must also have five ‘O’ level credit passes including mathematics, physics, chemistry, and English Language. In exceptional cases, ND lower credit pass may be acceptable.
  • Admission by Transfer

Occasionally, advanced placements are offered to students who transfer from other universities after a careful review of their transcripts by the Departmental Board of Studies.
