The FUTO Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards recently organised a pivotal Post-Grant Sustainability Workshop, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards self-sufficiency and the continued impact of its initiatives. As the World Bank Research Grant Project draws to a close, the Centre is proactively planning for its future to ensure the continuation of the impact of this transformational project.

The workshop which was facilitated by PRI-GLOBAL VENTURES LIMITED from 3rd – 6th March 2025, brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including CE-sPESS Faculty, FUTO Deans, Directors, Heads of Academic Departments and FUTO staff with existing research grants looking to enhance their sustainability strategy. This convergence of perspectives facilitated a rich exchange of ideas, expertise and experiences, ultimately enriching the Centre's sustainability strategy. The Workshop focused on topics such as Developing Sustainable Procurement Policies, Engaging with Local Communities and Leveraging Technology to Enhance Environmental Practices. Participants were also encouraged to brainstorm innovative funding models that could support the Centre’s initiatives post-grant.

Through interactive sessions, group discussions and presentations, participants identified key areas crucial to the Centre's sustainability:

  1. Diversifying funding streams: Exploring alternative funding sources to reduce dependence on a single grant.
  2. Building strategic partnerships: Fostering collaborations with industry, government, and academia to amplify the Centre's impact.
  3. Community Engagement: Engaging the local community meaningfully; people tend to support what they help to create.
  4. Continuous capacity building and knowledge transfer: Investing in staff development, training, and research to maintain the Centre's expertise and competitiveness.

The Post-Grant Sustainability Workshop marked a significant step towards securing the Centre's future. With a renewed sense of purpose and a clear roadmap, the FUTO CE-sPESS is poised to continue its vital work in promoting Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards. As the World Bank prepares to hand over the reins, the Centre is ready to take ownership of its destiny, driven by a shared commitment to excellence and sustainability.

The FUTO Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards remains dedicated to its mission of promoting sustainability. With the lessons learned and strategies developed during the Post-Grant Sustainability Workshop, the Centre through education, research, and community engagement is confident in its ability to sustain its operations, expand its impact, and continue setting the standard for excellence in sustainable development practices. As it transitions into this new phase, it invites all interested parties to join in this important journey towards a more sustainable future.
