FUTO VC Reiterates Commitment to Equal Opportunity, Accessibility
FUTO VC, Prof. I.N.S. Dozie says universities have a responsibility to create environments where everyone, irrespective of physical ability, can thrive without discrimination
Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Prof. I.N.S. Dozie, has reiterated the University's commitment to equal opportunity, inclusivity, and accessibility for all members of the University community.
Prof. Dozie stated this on Tuesday August 4, 2026 when a delegation of the Association of Accessibility Professionals (AAP), led by its Imo State Chairman, Chief Dr. Sharon Chidi Ohaka, paid a courtesy visit to his office.
The Vice-Chancellor commended the Association for its advocacy, and noted that universities have a responsibility to create environments where everyone, irrespective of physical ability or circumstance, can learn, work, and thrive without discrimination.
He restated FUTO's commitment to initiatives that promote equal access to education, information, and institutional services, and said the University is willing to explore collaboration with the Association on capacity building, awareness creation, policy development and the adoption of accessibility best practices.
Briefing the Vice-Chancellor earlier, Dr Ohaka said the visit was aimed at introducing the Association's accessibility project, and exploring areas of collaboration with FUTO to promote compliance with accessibility standards and equal participation, especially for persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
He explained that the Association seeks to advance accessibility in educational institutions, public services, and digital environments through awareness creation, capacity building, and support for policies and practices that promote inclusion.
According to him, accessibility should be regarded not only as a legal requirement but also as an essential component of social inclusion, quality service delivery, and sustainable development. He advocated the adoption of globally accepted accessibility standards in physical infrastructure, communication systems, learning resources, and digital platforms.
