A 3-man team from the African Polling Institute, led by Prof. Bade Falade, visited the Federal University of Technology, Owerri on August 26, 2019, to carry out the Needs Assessment Exercise for the Proposed Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standard (CE-SPESS).

Prof. Falade stated that the Institute is a consultancy firm appointed by the World Bank and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to carry out the Needs Assessment for the proposed Centre. The Institute, which prides itself as an independent, non-profit and non-partisan public opinion think-tank conducts opinion polls, survey, social research and evaluation studies at the intersection of democracy, governance, economic conditions and public life.

He stated emphatically that FUTO is amongst the six selected Universities in Nigeria to be recognized as Centres of Excellence adding that the main reason of their visit to the University was to interact with the Management, administer questionnaire and finally move round the facilities to check what they have written in conformity with the NUC laid down procedure.

Prof. Gloria Chukwudebe, the Dean, School of Computing and Information Technology, (SCIT), and the Former Director, Public Procurement and Research Centre (PPRC) also made a PowerPoint Presentation on how the University proposed to take procurement to the next level in conformity with… the developed world while hoping to collaborate with national and international institutions in research.

At the end of the facility tour to various Offices in the University which include the Public Procurement & Research Centre (PPRC), Institute of Women, Gender and Development Studies (IWoGDS), Environmental Sciences (EVS) and the University Library, Prof. Falade on behalf of the team, expressed satisfaction with the level of infrastructures domiciled in the University. He described the exercise as a smooth one while thanking the University Management for making their job seamless but harped on the need to renovate some structures in FUTO.

In his reaction, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Francis Chukwuemeka Eze, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof. J.S. Orebiyi thanked the Team for the detailed and honest assessment.
