The Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) has inaugurated its 28th democratically elected Students' Union Government (SUG), following the successful conduct of the University's 16th electronic SUG election.

The new executive, led by Comrade Richmond Ebubechukwu Obasi as President, took the oath of office on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the University Council Chambers.

The inauguration followed the electronic election conducted on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at the University's ICT Centre, where students voted for their preferred candidates, and the results were announced the same day in line with the University's e-voting system.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. I.N.S. Dozie, at the inauguration, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Development and Innovation), Prof. E. B. Etuk, charged the new student leaders to regard their electoral mandate as a call to service, and uphold accountability, discipline, and peaceful engagement.

Prof. Dozie reminded the new executives that they had been entrusted with the responsibility of representing their fellow students, and urged them to conduct themselves in ways that would protect their academic records, and enhance the reputation of the University.

He assured the new SUG leadership of the co-operation and support of the University Management in promoting the interests and welfare of students, while urging the executives to engage constructively with both students and Management.

Earlier, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Uche Chukwuocha, commended the University Management for providing an enabling environment for the conduct of the election, describing the process as free, fair, and credible.

In his inaugural address, the new SUG President, Comrade Richmond Obasi, pledged to serve all FUTO students with diligence, responsibility and accountability, irrespective of how they voted.

He described the mandate given to the new administration as a responsibility rather than a privilege, and pledged to listen to students, respond to their concerns, and work with his executive to deliver on their campaign promises. “There are no camps, no sides. There is only one FUTO, and we are all part of it,” he said.

The newly inaugurated executive comprises Okolie Chinaemerem Eziaha, Vice-President; Chukwuemeka Silas Ifeanyichukwu, Secretary-General; Okorie Precious Nnenna, Assistant Secretary-General; Enyinnaya Kingsley Apugo, Financial Secretary; and Kalagbor C. David, PRO/Director of Information.

Others are Daniel Chioma Esther, Treasurer; Nwachukwu Elochukwu Justus, Director of Sports; Ibeakanma Uzodinma, Director of Health; Orji Bond Chidiebere Ndukwe, Director of Transport; Dominic Favour Meshach, Director of Socials; and Ishiukwu Amaechi Joseph, Director of Welfare.

The immediate past SUG President Comrade Christopher Chukwuebuka Joseph, in his farewell address, highlighted the achievements of his administration and thanked the University Management for its support. He called on students to support the new leadership, and pledged to contribute to its success.
