The Entrepreneurial Cybernetics Research Team (ECRT)

In 2026, Prof. Asiegbu founded and leads the Entrepreneurial Cybernectics Research Team (ECRT) , a multi-disciplinary collective of scholars, cybernetic entrepreneurial scientists, and policy analysts. The team's mission is to move beyond simplistic narratives of startup success and failure by diagnosing the underlying systemic pathologies that plague the Nigerian startup ecosystem.

ECRT's Research Agenda includes:

1. Diagnosing the Ecosystem: Identifying specific "pathologies" that lead to failure by rigorously testing hypotheses related to identity drift, information overload, financial mismanagement, and weak environmental scanning.

2. Mapping Vulnerabilities: Modeling how power-law dynamics (e.g., a funding winter, a talent exodus) create cascading risks, offering early warning indicators for the entire ecosystem.

3. Providing Scalable Solutions: Developing practical tools—such as the "Pivot Health Index," "Founder Experiential Variety Scale," and "Structural Coupling Assessment Tool"—that founders, investors, and policymakers can use to build more resilient ventures.

The team explores cybernetic frameworks including:

- The Viable System Model: Diagnosing whether startups possess the critical functions required for survival and adaptation.

- The Law of Requisite Variety: Understanding why a founder's cognitive model, a team's diversity, or a business's operational model must be as complex as the market it seeks to serve.

- Autopoiesis and Structural Coupling: Examining how startups maintain their identity while co-evolving with stakeholders.

- Information Theory and Entropy: Identifying the signals and noise in an overwhelming information environment.

- Power-Law Distributions and System Resilience: Understanding how a single shock can trigger cascading failures across the entire ecosystem.

"The Nigerian startup ecosystem is not just a collection of businesses; it is a vital engine for job creation, innovation, and economic diversification. A failure to understand and address its systemic pathologies will result in a devastating loss of potential—for the founders, their employees, the investors, and the Nigerian economy. Our work is dedicated to ensuring that the next generation of ventures are not just funded, but are fundamentally viable and resilient."
