The Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius I. Ugorji, has administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to 225 candidates at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), during his pastoral visit to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Chaplaincy (STACC), FUTO.

The pastoral visit, held on Sunday, September 27, 2026, featured a Holy Mass celebrated by the Archbishop, assisted by the Chaplain of STACC, Rev. Fr. Cosmas Uzoigwe, and other priests.

In his homily, the Archbishop described the University as a place for the acquisition of knowledge and the holistic development of the intellect, mind, soul, and body. He said education should prepare individuals not only for life in the present world but also for their ultimate purpose.

He emphasised the role of the Chaplaincy in supporting the spiritual formation of members of the University community, and encouraged Christians to live lives guided by faith and continual personal renewal.

Addressing students, Archbishop Ugorji cautioned against the pursuit of quick wealth through questionable means, including gambling, human trafficking and other practices that undermine responsible living. He urged young people to embrace hard work and legitimate means of livelihood.

The Archbishop also challenged lecturers to recognise their influence on students, and lead by example. “You have a sacred responsibility as teachers, on account of your massive influence on students. The greatest curriculum you can give your students is through your life,” the Prelate said.

Speaking to the newly confirmed, Archbishop Ugorji urged them to deepen their faith and demonstrate it through their conduct and service to others. He reminded them that Confirmation strengthens the grace received at Baptism, and called on them to become committed witnesses to the Gospel.

In his remarks at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor thanked Archbishop Ugorji for visiting the Chaplaincy and the University, describing the visit as an expression of the Archbishop’s commitment to the spiritual well-being of the University community.

Prof. Dozie, who, together with his wife, stood as sponsors during the Confirmation rites, congratulated the newly confirmed, and encouraged them to remain faithful to their Christian commitments.

He reiterated his administration's commitment to the holistic development of students, and called for continued support from members of the University community in achieving that objective.
